Once Again, Flood Insurance Program to Expire Unless Congress Acts
Federal officials are putting fresh pressure on Congress to take action on the National Flood Insurance Program, whose authorization expires at the end of this month, one day before hurricane season begins.
FEMA Asks Congress for Two-Year NFIP Extension
With the expiration of the current authorization of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) looming, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) sent a letter to Congress on April 17 asking that it pass a two-year NFIP extension.
The flood insurance program faces its next expiration on May 31. The full House and the Senate Banking Committee have passed a comprehensive reform bill (H.R. 1309) that includes a five-year reauthorization. All that remains is for the full Senate to pass it; then a conference would be needed to resolve differences. But so far, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid hasn’t indicated whether he will call the bill up before the flood insurance program expires.

PIA Lauds Rep. Fincher for Action to Reduce Burdens on Small Business

PIA National is lauding Rep. Stephen Fincher (R-Tenn.) for his successful efforts to reduce regulatory burdens on small businesses – including insurance agencies. Rep. Fincher, a member of the House Financial Services Committee, was the sponsor of the Jumpstart Our Business Startups (JOBS) Act which was signed into law by President Obama on April 4. It cuts unnecessary regulations on small businesses and raises the prospect that it could fuel business growth and spur demand for business insurance.
